Ornamental fish nutrition represents one of the most challenging aspects of the hobby. Not only does every species or family of fish have its own, distinct nutritional requirement but each stage in their life cycle is likely to have a unique dietary need. Every species of fish will have evolved a specialised digestive system to consume a particular range of feed items. Many species may even be classified by their dietary requirements. Fish that consume mainly plant based material are known as herbivores and have evolved a long and complex digestive tract that enables them to break down the hard to digest plant material. Predatory fish, known as carnivores, have evolved a shorter digestive tract that is able to break down the animal based proteins that make up the majority of their diet. Other fish have evolved a digestive tract that is capable of breaking down both animal proteins and plant material.

Matching the dietary requirements of any species of fish to the ingredients of any fish food is one of the most important aspects of maintaining the health of our fish over the long term. Failure to provide our fish with the correct diet may not only result in a decline in growth but is likely to lead to an increase in the amount of waste produced by those fish and a subsequent reduction in water quality. Feeding our fish with an incorrect or poor quality diet has also been associated with a compromised immune response, reduced fecundity (breeding efficiency) and inferior colours.
